Historic Town of Vigan

The old Mestizo district of Vigan, Ilocos Sur is a “living museum” of Filipino-Spanish-Chinese architectural heritage. The local government, homeowners, the National Museum, University of Northern Philippines and non-government organizations had organized together with a common goal to preserve the historic century-old structures. Vigan was called the Intramuros of the North during the Spanish colonial regime.

Banaue Rice Terraces

The Rice Terraces of the Cordilleras (on the island of Luzon) ar a cultural landscape developed 2000 years ago by the Ifugao people. These terraces are still in use, and are under continuous maintenance by the current Ifugao farmers.
There are many more rice terraces in Asia (f.e. on Bali_, but these in the Philippine Cordilleras are outstanding because of their altitude (up to 1500 meters) and steep slopes (maximum of 70 degrees). A complex system of dams, sluizes, channels and bamboo pipes keeps whole groups of terraces adequately flooded.

Subterranean River National Park

It features a limestone karst mountain landscape with an 8.2 km. navigable underground river. A distinguishing feature of the river is that it winds through a cave before flowing directly into the South China Sea. It includes major formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and several large chambers. The lower portion of the river is subject to tidal influences. The underground river is reputed to be the world’s longest river.

Chocolate Hills Natural Monument

It has been declared the country’s 3rd National Geological Monument on June 18, 1988 in recognition of its scientific value and geomorphic uniqueness.

Similar to the formations found in Java, the conical and almost symmetrical and same-sized hills known as the “Chocolate Hills”, are more aesthetically extensive. During the dry season when precipitation in inadequate, the grass-covered hills turn chocolate brown, hence the name in reference to a branded confection.
